How The Over The Top Swing Plane Solution Works
OVER THE TOP Solution Setup Instructions
Loosen the Retaining Knob and adjust the OVER THE TOP Solution Plane Arm to position the Plane Arm at a 90° angle to the Ground Spike Assembly. Tighten the Retaining Knob and push the Ground Spike into the ground with the Plane Arm pointing down the target line. Make sure the Plane Arm is parallel to the ground. Rotate the Plane Arm 90° to point in a direction perpendicular to the target line. If the Plane Arm remains parallel to the ground, setup is complete. If the Plane Arm is not parallel to the ground, adjust the Ground Spike in the ground until it is parallel. Rotate the Plane Arm back 90° to point down the target line. If the Plane Arm remains parallel to the ground, the setup in complete.
Applications: Eliminate an OVER THE TOP Swing
One of the most common swing plane faults is the so called “Over the Top Swing”. In the Over the Top Swing, the plane of the club as it approaches impact is above the proper swing plane causing the club path to track from outside to inside across the target line. This swing path will result in a popped up tee shot, pull hook or slice.
To correct the problem, setup the OVER the TOP Solution so that it acts as an obstruction to the path of the club whenever the plane of the swing is Over the Top. The club head will strike the OVER the Top Solution providing instant feedback. The OVER THE TOP Solution should be placed just outside the ball and adjusted so that the Plane Arm is parallel to the shaft of the club at setup. Alternatively, place the OVER THE TOP Solution off the inside of your back foot and slightly outside the target line. Again, adjust the Plane Arm so that it is parallel to the shaft of the club at setup.
Chipping and Putting Alignment.
The club head paths for putting and chipping are identical. In both cases, the club head on takeaway should move straight back from the ball along the target line and then through the ball at impact continuing along the target line to the end of the stroke. To practice the proper stroke, insert the Over the Top Solution into the ground with the Plane Arm parallel to the ground pointing down the target line. Place a ball at the approximate center of the Plane Arm. Setup on the opposite side of the Plane Arm. The proper putting or chipping stroke will move away from the target at takeaway, parallel to the Plane Arm and then through the ball at impact without hitting the Plane Arm. Practice these strokes for perfect putting and chipping every time.
Master a proper takeaway.
A good golf swing starts with a correct takeaway. At takaway, the clubhead should travel along the target line until the wrists hinge. If the clubhead travels inside the target line the beginning of the backswing will be flat and below the proper swing plane. If the clubhead travels outside the target line, the backswing will be above the swing plane at the start and result in an over the top swing.
To correct the takeway, set the OVER THE TOP Solution vertically into the ground about a club length behind the ball and slightly inside the target line. When the takeway is properly managed, the club head will pass just outside of the OVER THE TOP Solution.
Perfect an Inside/Out Swing.
The correct path of the club head just before impact should be from inside the target line to outside on a circle around your body. The plane of the circle should pass through the plane defined by the shaft of the club at setup.
To insure that the clubhead approaches impact from inside the target line, place the OVER THE TOP Solution vertically in the ground about a club length behind the ball and slightly inside the target line. On the down swing, make sure the clubhead travels inside the OVER THE TOP Solution without making contact.
Guarantee Perfect Alignment.
Back to basics. A proper golf swing starts with the correct grip, good posture and setup, and alignment of the club face, feet, knees, hips, and shoulders.
Use the OVER THE TOP Solution as an alignment guide by placing the Plane Arm parallel to the target line in front of your setup position. Approach the shot by first aligning the club face perpendicular to the line of the Plane Arm and then step into the shot by aligning your feet, knees, hips and shoulders parallel to the Plane Arm.
Track the Follow Through.
After impact, the clubhead should travel inside the target line in a circle parallel to the swing plane and around your body. The follow through should be a continuation of the downswing and remain on the same plane from the start of the downswing to the finish of the follow through.
Use the OVER THE TOP Solution as a guide to establish the follow through plane. Place the OVER THE TOP Solution vertically in the ground about a club length in front of the ball and slightly inside the target line. During the follow through, the club head should pass outside the OVER THE TOP Solution without making contact.
